The Antikythera mechanism is considered to the world’s first mechanical computer, designed to calculate astronomical positions. It was recovered in 1900–1901 from the Antikythera wreck. Its significance and complexity were not understood until recent decades. The construction has been dated to the early 1st century BC. Now on show at the Archaelogical Museum of Athens, Greece.
